After Looking
Anna Semenoff
|
It is a pleasure to see a young artist from our community stepping forward with work that is full of mood. Anna Semenoff’s pieces show a willingness to explore ideas through art. Her figures and objects are expressive and thoughtful.
Semenoff has a natural sensitivity to line and form. Her figures are built with loose, confident outlines that often remain visible, allowing the viewer to see how the image developed. Instead of hiding earlier marks, she lets them stay on the surface. This gives the piece a sense of movement, and allows the viewer to understand how the artist thought through the composition.
The proportions of the body are often stretched or simplified. By allowing the figure to shift away from strict realism, Semenoff creates images that feel more emotional than descriptive.
Her use of oil is particularly natural and raw. She creates soft transitions between colours and gives the drawings a subtle depth. In some areas the marks are thick and opaque, while in others it is thin and transparent, allowing the surface of the paper to breathe through.
We invite everyone to come spend some time with these works and see the progress of a local artist who is finding her path.
