The Studio Experience

A hands-on art program where students displayed their creativity layer by layer.

Classes of the SD51 participated in this multi-week collaboration during the month of October, 2025.

Designed for a range of ages, LAYERCAKE encouraged imagination, problem-solving, and community making. Experiencing a professional gallery setting can seem daunting for all ages, not just children. This large collaboration dispelled that notion and placed the children in a studio setting to let them flex their creative muscles.

From color paints, markers, pastels and textured items, each participant developed their own artwork while contributing to a collaborative piece.

The walls of the Ted Fogg Gallery were covered in canvas, wrapped around the entirety of the space. The artwork progressed from younger students working near the lower areas of the canvas to older students contributing toward the top.

Once the art work was completed - local tradesmen assisted with great skill to help transform the large swaths of canvas into stunning individual pieces in varying sizes. Each piece carries the energy of young artists and the spirit of collaboration between art and craft.

This grand studio experience is now an exhibition in the very spot it was created. For the month of November into the first week of December, LAYERCAKE will be on show.
